31 days of stories

It is officially Cemetery Season! Of course, everyone treats the month of October differently, but for us taphophiles it's the most wonderful time of the year! I'm feeling slightly betrayed by nature because even though it's October, here in western North Carolina it's still 80 degrees and Hurricane Helene ravaged our neighbors in the High Country, so the typical fall mountain beauty will be in short supply this year. In addition to the tragic loss of life and property, I have a horrible feeling that many of our mountain cemeteries may have been damaged or destroyed by Helene. Please keep praying for these amazing, resilient, and strong communities who are grieving and rebuilding.

This year, I decided to launch a social media series highlighting the stories I've discovered through researching cemeteries. My tagline is "every burial is a story," and October is the perfect time to share these stories. I won't be posting on my website every day, but I will be posting daily on Instagram and TikTok (@mistress_of_cemeteries), so be sure to follow!

Some of the stories I'll be telling include:

  • The Runaway Wife- the tale of a woman and her (at least) four marriages.

  • We're All Rodina Here- the story of my Czech ancestors.

  • Searching for Martha- researching a possible outcast in the family tree.

  • Justice in an Unjust World- a white man is hung for murder, but not for torture.

  • Burials Before the Cemetery- exploring how there are stones older than a cemetery.

  • French Rebel in a NC Schoolhouse- the legend of one of Napoleon's right hand men escaping a traitor's death to teach in rural North Carolina.

  • The Water Ain't Right- the tragic death of a young bride whose body was discovered in the family well.

Some of these stories will also be featured in my blog (or have already been featured), but all these stories and more will be coming to social media this month.

Also, be sure to check out the latest fall and Halloween designs on the Etsy shop. Christmas designs are also making their way into the store. If you're local to western North Carolina, don't forget to stop by my booth at the Taylorsville Apple Festival on Saturday, October 19 from 9-5!
